Effect of magnesium oxide on battery performance

In this paper, by comparing the discharge phenomena of two different MgO contents of isolation powder at 500℃ and 600℃, it was found that the battery with low MgO content in isolation powder had low internal resistance and excellent electrical performance at relatively low temperature; however, when working at relatively high temperature, the inhibiting ability of MgO on the flow of molten salt electrolyte was weakened and the self-discharge phenomenon of the battery was aggravated and the working time was shortened.

In order to improve the electrochemical performance of Zn-Ni battery, magnesium oxide was doped into the zinc cathode active material by physical mixing method, and the effects of different magnesium oxide additions on the charge/discharge characteristics, internal resistance, discharge capacity and cycle life of Zn-Ni battery were studied by constant current charge/discharge test. The experiments showed that the addition of magnesium oxide in Zn-Ni battery can reduce the charge/discharge polarization, reduce the internal resistance in the late cycle, improve the utilization rate of cathode active material and extend the cycle life. Adding 1.0%wt of magnesium oxide addition should not be too large.
