A new method based on inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) was developed for the accurate and reliable analysis of metal impurity elements in high purity magnesium oxide powders. ICP-MS/MS can effectively reduce polyatomic interferences during the determination of metal impurity elements in magnesium oxide matrices by enabling a new mass filter. The effect of interference elimination in single quadrupole (SQ) mode and tandem quadrupole (MS/MS) mode was compared using He as the collision gas and O2 and NH3/He mixture as the reaction gas. Some specific mass spectrometric interferences, especially double-charged ion interferences, could not be eliminated by using the He collision mode; however, the transfer of analytes to oxide ions or cluster ions could achieve interference-free analysis of the elements to be measured and obtain very low detection limits, and the accuracy of the method was evaluated by spiked recovery experiments. The linear correlation coefficients (R2) of the elements were not less than 0.9998, and the recoveries of the real samples were 93%~108% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.6%~4.4%. The method can be fully used for...
